  • The man-made island of Chek Lap Kok is 6 km long and 3.5 km wide, and is visible from space
  • The new airport island covers an area of 1,248 ha made from 25% existing island and 75% reclaimed from the sea
  • 197 million cu m of reclaimed materials were used to build the island
  • Ten tonnes of material were moved every second during the land reclamation
  • Nearly half the world's population lives within five hours of flying time of Hong Kong
  • 35 million passengers annually
  • 5,500 passengers per hour at peak times
  • 19,000 bags handled per hour at peak times
  • At the end of Phase 1 the total area of the building is approximately equivalent to the size of London's Soho District
  • The baggage hall alone is the size of Wembley Stadium in London or Yankee Stadium in New York, large enough to contain five Boeing 747s wing tip to wing tip
