A land plot of approximately 375,600 sq m in Hengqin has been recently made available by the Urban Planning and Construction Bureau in Hengqin for a 50-year lease. According to news report, University of Macau (UM) is planning to build a new campus for an international-standard public university recognized by the Macau SAR Government.
The plot is located at the intersection of the south bank of the Tianmu River and the north side of Hengqin Boulevard, close to the Macau New Neighbourhood residential development. With a maximum floor area of 711,000 sq m, the site is designated for facilities specialising in science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine for a Macau public university. It is expected to accommodate approximately 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
This second campus of UM will be about 40 percent the size of the current campus, which is 10-minute drive away. With a floor area of approximately 940,000 sq m, the existing UM campus comprises more than 60 buildings and facilities, serving 13,500 students.
The proposed new campus is expected to be completed and in operations in 2028.
