Art to renew old districts

The Urban Renewal Authority announced a pilot scheme comprising five initiatives in support of arts and cultural activities in old urban areas. The authority's chairman Barry Cheung said a dedicated budget of $25 m has been set aside for 2011-12 to allow for an increase in arts and cultural activities in old urban areas. The authority also plans to work with local groups in organising arts and cultural programmes related to urban renewal. A partnership approach will create efficiency as well, Mr Cheung added.

The authority will fully utilise its venues and facilities, including the Oasis Gallery, and its acquired and yet-to-be demolished premises. Meanwhile, joint venture partners will be encouraged to fully utilise public open spaces and malls to stage arts and cultural activities. Mr Cheung said identified public open spaces suitable for arts and cultural activities at a number of completed URA projects.
The authority will also inject cultural elements into urban renewal projects. Mr Cheung said the authority's new strategy will not duplicate the efforts of government departments and organisations in this area.
