Melbourne design firm to plan world heritage site in Nanjing
A Melbourne design consortium has won a contract to draw up a master plan for a 40 sq km world heritage site in Nanjing, China. The consortium also includes Nanjing University's faculty of antiquities and heritage as well as two Shanghai research groups that will undertake economic and demographic research.
The site is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage area. The group would draw up concept designs for three new significant buildings in the area. The local government has decided to install a public transport network to cope with visitors. This would consist of electric buses, aerial tramway, cable cars and car-parks. This is the Melbourne company's second contract in Nanjing. It has just completed the master plan for a high-tech zone in the city that aims to house 200,000 people. The company says the new project requires an architecture that is more submissive to the historic landscape.
